How to generate a HAR File

What is a HAR file?

HAR files are used to gather data from users’ browser which can be used to troubleshoot network or resource issues. This information includes detailed timing information about the requests made between the browser and the server.

Google Chrome

  1. Open Google Chrome
  2. Navigate to https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu
  3. Open the [ ] menu > More tools > Developer Tools
  4. Select the Network Tab
  5. Within the Network Tab, select the Preserve Log option
  6. Make sure that the circle in the top left is RED ( )
    • This will begin recording requests
  7. Reload the page
  8. Once the page is done loading, go back to the Dev Tools, and click on the Console Tab
  9. Right-click inside the console area and select Save As, save this file in a convenient place
  10. Go back to the Network Tab, right-click on any network list entry and select Save all as HAR with content
  11. Please upload both the HAR file and the Console Log file to the support thread

Firefox

  1. Open Firefox
  2. Navigate to https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu
  3. Open the [ ] menu > Web Developer > Network
  4. Select the Network Tab
  5. Within the Network Tab, select the Preserve Log option
  6. Reload the page
  7. Once the page is done loading, go back to the Dev Tools, and click on the Console Tab
  8. Right-click inside the console area and click Select All and Copy Message
  9. Copy the messages to the support thread or save to a text file
  10. Go back to the Network Tab, right-click on any network list entry and select Save all as HAR
  11. Please upload both the HAR file and the Console Log file to the support thread

Safari

  1. Open Safari
  2. Navigate to https://ui.adsabs.harvard.edu
  3. Open Safari > Preferences > Advance > Click Show Develop menu in menu bar
  4. Select Develop in menu > Show Web Inspector > select Network Tab
  5. Within the Network Tab, select the Preserve Log option
  6. Reload the page
  7. Once the page is done loading, go back to the Dev Tools
  8. Click Export at the top right of the Network Tab
  9. Go to the Console Tab and screenshot the messages
  10. Please upload both the HAR file and the Console Log screenshot(s) to the support thread
